Bangladesh's aspiration to join ASEAN is not new. President Ziaur Rahman first sought membership in the late 1970s, only to be rebuffed. That rejection ultimately led to the founding of SAARC in 1985. Now, nearly five decades later, Bangladesh under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has made ASEAN accession a top foreign policy priority.
