  • the 1883 eruption of Krakatau

The volcanic complex of Krakatoa occupies a volatile junction driven by the northward subduction of the Indo-Australian plate beneath the Sunda Plate. This geothermal crucible feeds a shallow crustal reservoir with highly evolved, silica-rich dacitic magma.

Prior to 1883, the island was a coalesced structure formed by three cones: Perboewatan (north), Danan (center), and Rakata (south, 790m high).

Structural integrity was compromised by ancient caldera-forming events (~416 AD), leaving a 7-km-wide submarine scar. The stage was set for a phreatomagmatic catastrophe.
