Container ports play a crucial role in international trade by connecting countries, facilitating the movement of goods, and supporting the global economy. Every year, millions of containers pass through major ports around the world, making them essential gateways for global supply chains.

According to Lloyd's List One Hundred Container Ports 2026, the world's busiest container ports are dominated by Asian ports, highlighting Asia's significant role in international shipping and maritime trade.

Based on the ranking measured in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), Shanghai Port in China takes first place, handling an impressive 55.1 million TEUs. Singapore follows in second place with 44.7 million TEUs, while Ningbo-Zhoushan, also in China, ranks third with 43.9 million TEUs.

China continues to demonstrate its dominance in global container shipping, with several ports occupying leading positions. Shenzhen ranks fourth with 35.4 million TEUs, followed by Qingdao in fifth place with 32.9 million TEUs.

Guangzhou comes sixth, handling 28.1 million TEUs. Other Chinese ports in the ranking include Tianjin in eighth place with 24.0 million TEUs and Xiamen in fifteenth place with 12.5 million TEUs.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Busan Port ranks seventh, recording 24.9 million TEUs. The Middle East is represented by Dubai, which occupies ninth place with 15.6 million TEUs. Malaysia also has a strong presence, with Port Klang ranking tenth and handling 15.1 million TEUs. The Ports of Johor follow closely in eleventh place, also recording 15.1 million TEUs.

European ports also secure positions among the world's busiest. Rotterdam in the Netherlands ranks twelfth with 14.2 million TEUs, while Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium takes thirteenth place with 13.6 million TEUs. Hong Kong completes the fourteenth position, handling 13.0 million TEUs.

Overall, the 2026 ranking highlights Asia's remarkable dominance in global container shipping, with 11 of the 15 busiest ports located in the region. China's ports, in particular, account for a significant share of the leading positions.

This reflects the region's strong manufacturing industries, extensive trading networks, and strategic importance in international maritime transportation.

The ranking also demonstrates the importance of major ports in Europe and the Middle East. As international trade continues to evolve, these ports will remain vital to global commerce, economic development, and the movement of goods worldwide.
