A 2026 Gallup survey offers an informative look at how people in the United States perceive countries around the world. Conducted among American adults in February 2026, the survey found especially positive views of several nations, with Japan and Italy receiving the strongest overall ratings.

According to Gallup, Americans’ opinions of other countries can be shaped by diplomatic ties, international alliances, cultural relationships, and major developments in global affairs.

Japan took the top position, with 85% of Americans expressing a favorable opinion and just 9% holding an unfavorable view. Italy ranked second, receiving an 84% favorable rating and a 10% unfavorable rating.

Japan's performance is particularly significant, as its current favorability level ranks among the highest Gallup has recorded since it began monitoring American views of the country in 1989.

Canada and Denmark tied for third place, with both countries receiving 80% favorable ratings. Their unfavorable figures, however, were different. Canada recorded a 15% unfavorable rating, compared with only 10% for Denmark.

Canada continues to enjoy a generally positive reputation among Americans, despite a notable decline compared with the previous year. Gallup found that its favorability dropped by nine percentage points, bringing it to the lowest level recorded in the organization's long-term tracking of the country.

France and the United Kingdom each received favorable ratings of 76%. France had a slightly lower unfavorable rating of 17%, while the United Kingdom recorded 18%.

Germany came next, with 75% of Americans viewing it favorably and 19% unfavorably. The results indicate that several major European nations continue to maintain strong and positive reputations in the United States.

Lower on the ranking, Mexico received a 66% favorable rating and 32% unfavorable rating. Ukraine was viewed favorably by 63% of Americans, while 31% expressed an unfavorable opinion. India completed the ten countries highlighted in the survey, recording 61% favorable and 30% unfavorable ratings.

Overall, the results indicate that Americans hold broadly favorable opinions of all ten countries featured. The highest-rated nations are largely close U.S. allies or countries that maintain important cultural, economic, and historical relationships with the United States.

However, the differences between favorable and unfavorable ratings also demonstrate that public opinion can be more nuanced than a single overall score suggests.

The Gallup findings consequently provide a useful picture of American attitudes toward the international community and reveal which countries enjoy the strongest positive perceptions among Americans in 2026.
