Asia leads the world's high-speed rail with China and Japan dominating.
Asia continues to dominate the world of high-speed rail in 2026, with countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, and India operating some of the fastest and most advanced trains ever built. These trains are transforming transportation by reducing travel time, improving connectivity, and showcasing cutting-edge engineering.
Leading the list is the Shanghai Maglev from China, which reaches an incredible 460 km/h. Using magnetic levitation technology, the train floats above the track instead of using wheels, allowing it to travel from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city in only a few minutes. It remains the fastest commercial train in the world.
In second place is China’s futuristic CR450 prototype with a planned operational speed of 400 km/h. The train is still undergoing testing and is expected to enter service soon, representing the next generation of Chinese bullet trains.
China also dominates the next positions with the CR400AF Fuxing and the CRH380A Hexie, both operating at 350 km/h. These trains serve major routes such as Beijing–Shanghai and are known for their comfort, efficiency, and reliability.
Indonesia proudly joins the list with the Whoosh, also known as KCIC. Operating at 350 km/h, it is Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway and connects Jakarta with Bandung in less than an hour. The project symbolizes Indonesia’s modernization in rail transport.
Japan remains a global rail pioneer with the E5 Shinkansen reaching 320 km/h. The famous Shinkansen network is admired worldwide for its punctuality and safety. Other Japanese models such as the E2 Shinkansen and N700 Shinkansen operate between 300 and 320 km/h across major cities.
South Korea’s KTX reaches 305 km/h and has significantly reduced travel times between Seoul and Busan. Taiwan’s Taiwan High Speed Rail 700T operates at 300 km/h and is one of the island’s most important transportation systems.
Finally, India’s Vande Bharat Express completes the list with a top speed of 180 km/h. Although slower than other Asian bullet trains, it represents a major step forward for India’s railway modernization and domestic train manufacturing industry.
