Asia's Largest Militaries

Asia is home to some of the world’s largest and most powerful armed forces. Many countries across the continent maintain large military organizations to protect national sovereignty, respond to regional security challenges, and support international peacekeeping operations.

The size of a military is often measured by the number of active personnel serving in the army, navy, air force, and other defense branches.

China has the largest military in Asia, with around 2 million active personnel. The country has invested heavily in modern defense technology, naval expansion, cyber capabilities, and advanced aircraft. China’s military plays a central role in protecting its national interests and maintaining regional influence.

With approximately 1.4 million active personnel, India possesses the second-largest military force in Asia. India maintains one of the world’s biggest standing armies and continues to strengthen its defense systems through modernization programs and domestic weapons production.

North Korea ranks third with about 1.3 million active personnel. Despite economic challenges, the country maintains a massive military presence and emphasizes defense readiness as a key national priority.

In Pakistan, the armed forces include around 660,000 active personnel. Pakistan’s military has long played an important role in national security and disaster response, while also maintaining significant regional influence.

Iran follows with approximately 610,000 active personnel. Iran’s military structure includes both the regular armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which together contribute to the country’s regional defense strategy.

Both Viet Nam and South Korea maintain around 450,000 active personnel each. Viet Nam’s military is known for its historical resilience and strong national defense tradition. South Korea, meanwhile, maintains a highly advanced military supported by modern technology and mandatory military service.

Indonesia has around 405,000 active personnel. As the largest archipelagic nation in the world, Indonesia relies on its military to secure vast maritime territories and maintain national stability.

Finally, Taiwan maintains approximately 361,000 active personnel. Taiwan continues to strengthen its defense capabilities through modernization and strategic planning in response to regional tensions.
