Best Southeast Asian Countries to Relocate to in 2026
Singapore is the best country to relocate in Southeast Asia, according to Rumavi.
Southeast Asia remains one of the world’s most attractive regions for people seeking a new place to live, work, retire, or build a business. According to the Rumavi Global Relocation Index 2026, the region offers a wide range of options, from highly developed financial hubs to affordable destinations with relaxed lifestyles.
Rumavi evaluates 192 countries across 24 metrics covering financial and tax conditions, livability and health, safety and stability, and settling and opportunity.
At the top is Singapore, with a score of 72.6. It ranks second globally and is Southeast Asia’s strongest performer, benefiting from excellent infrastructure, financial stability, digital connectivity, safety, and business opportunities. Its main drawback is affordability, particularly housing.
Malaysia follows closely at 72.0, making it an especially compelling choice for those seeking a balance between affordability, modern infrastructure, healthcare, and lifestyle. Its combination of major cities, beaches, and relatively accessible residency options makes it one of the region’s most versatile relocation destinations.
Brunei scores 69.3, followed by Thailand at 68.1. Thailand remains particularly attractive for retirees and digital nomads, supported by programs such as the LTR and Destination Thailand Visa. The Philippines scores 63.9, offering widespread English use, relatively affordable living, and established retirement pathways.
Vietnam, with 63.6, is another increasingly popular choice, particularly for people attracted to its dynamic cities, growing economy, and comparatively low cost of living. Indonesia scores 62.4, placing seventh in Southeast Asia.
Rumavi highlights Indonesia’s exceptional affordability and strong appeal to digital nomads, although business barriers and property restrictions can be challenges for foreigners.
Further down the ranking are Cambodia (61.4), Laos (59.0), Timor-Leste (55.1), and Myanmar (47.9). These countries may appeal to adventurous movers or those prioritizing lower costs and distinctive local lifestyles, although infrastructure, stability, or settlement considerations can make relocation more challenging.
Overall, the 2026 Rumavi rankings show that Southeast Asia offers an unusually broad spectrum of relocation choices.
Singapore and Malaysia stand out for overall quality and opportunity, while Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia offer attractive combinations of affordability, lifestyle, and accessibility. Ultimately, the best destination depends on whether a mover prioritizes career opportunities, retirement, family life, remote work, or low living costs.
