Countries with the Friendliest Locals According to Expats

According to the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 Survey, several countries stand out for the friendliness and welcoming attitude of their local communities.

Indonesia takes the top spot, reflecting its reputation for warm hospitality and strong community values. Expats often appreciate the kindness of Indonesians and the welcoming atmosphere they encounter in everyday life.

Colombia follows closely, offering a lively social culture where friendliness and openness can make it easier for newcomers to form connections.

Mexico also stands among the world's most welcoming destinations. In fact, InterNations ranks Mexico first overall in its Ease of Settling In Index, with the country taking the top position for Local Friendliness, Finding Friends, and Culture & Welcome. Expats particularly praise how easy it is to make local friends and feel at home.

The Philippines is another country where hospitality plays an important role. Friendly interactions, a strong sense of community, and widespread English use can help foreigners feel comfortable.

Brazil is similarly known for its energetic social culture and welcoming residents. InterNations places Brazil fourth in the overall Ease of Settling In Index and second for friendliness toward foreign residents.

Panama is also highly regarded for making newcomers feel welcome. Ninety percent of expats surveyed describe locals as generally friendly, significantly above the global average of 63 percent. Oman adds a different cultural experience, with its traditional emphasis on hospitality and respectful relationships.

Thailand, meanwhile, has an especially strong reputation for friendliness. In the 2026 survey, 89 percent of expats give positive ratings to the general friendliness of local residents, while 85 percent say locals are friendly toward foreign residents.

Kenya and Vietnam complete the list, offering newcomers opportunities to experience vibrant cultures alongside welcoming local communities. Vietnam, in particular, combines rich traditions with an increasingly international expat environment.

Together, these ten countries demonstrate that a friendly community can be one of the most valuable aspects of life abroad. For expats seeking connection, belonging, and meaningful cultural experiences, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil, Panama, Oman, Thailand, Kenya, and Vietnam offer plenty of reasons to feel welcome.
