Taiwan is home to a diverse foreign-resident population, reflecting the island’s strong economic connections, employment opportunities, education links, and cultural relationships with countries across Asia and beyond.

According to the National Immigration Agency (NIA) of Taiwan, its monthly statistics include foreign residents by nationality. The NIA published the June 2026 edition on July 27, 2026.

Based on the figures provided, Indonesians formed the largest foreign-resident community in Taiwan in June 2026, with 364,408 residents. Indonesia’s large presence reflects the longstanding migration relationship between the two countries, particularly in employment sectors such as manufacturing, caregiving, domestic services, and other occupations.

Vietnamese residents ranked second, numbering 324,577. Vietnam has become an important source of workers and migrants for Taiwan, creating strong social and economic connections between the two countries. The Philippines ranked third, with 207,286 residents, making Filipinos another major Southeast Asian community on the island.

Other Southeast Asian nationalities also accounted for substantial populations. Thailand had 84,670 residents, while Malaysia had 22,501. These communities contribute to Taiwan’s multicultural environment through employment, business, education, tourism-related activities, and cultural exchange.

Outside Southeast Asia, Japan had 14,199 residents, while the United States accounted for 9,774. Japanese residents represent one of Taiwan’s important East Asian communities, supported by close economic, historical, and cultural ties between Taiwan and Japan.

American residents also contribute to Taiwan’s international character, particularly through business, education, professional employment, and other activities.

The remaining nationalities in the top ten were Myanmar, with 7,895 residents, India, with 6,792, and South Korea, with 4,557. Although their populations were considerably smaller than those of Indonesia, Vietnam, or the Philippines, these communities demonstrate the increasingly international composition of Taiwan’s resident population.

Overall, the figures highlight the particularly strong role of Southeast Asian migration in Taiwan. Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand together accounted for more than 980,000 residents based on the figures provided. Their combined presence illustrates how migration has become an important part of Taiwan’s society and economy.

The nationality figures also show that Taiwan’s foreign-resident population is not limited to one region.

While Southeast Asians form the largest groups among the listed nationalities, Japan, the United States, India, and South Korea add further diversity. Together, these communities contribute to Taiwan’s increasingly multicultural society and strengthen its connections with countries around the world.
