Jonatan Christie Rises to World No. 1 in New BWF Men’s Singles Ranking
Indonesia's Jonatan Christie is officially the world's first in BWF single men's ranking, the first time for Indonesia after 26 years.
The latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) men’s singles ranking has brought a major change at the top of world badminton.
Indonesian star Jonatan Christie has officially become the world No. 1 men’s singles player with 87,631 points, moving up two places from his previous position. The ranking was updated on August 25, 2026, following the conclusion of the BWF World Championships in New Delhi.
Christie’s rise is particularly significant because it marks the first time in his career that he has reached the top of the world rankings. His previous career-best position was No. 2, achieved in January 2023. Although Christie was eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Championships, the results of his main competitors allowed him to move into first place.
Just behind Christie is France’s Christo Popov, who has 87,002 points. The difference between the two players is only 629 points, showing how competitive the battle for the No. 1 position has become.
Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn follows closely in third place with 86,915 points, while Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen occupies fourth with 86,580 points. Chou’s position was helped by his bronze medal at the World Championships.
Denmark’s Anders Antonsen is fifth with 85,405 points. Meanwhile, China’s Shi Yu Qi, who previously held the world No. 1 position, has dropped to sixth with 84,705 points after an early exit from the World Championships. France’s Alex Lanier completes the group of seven players listed here with 78,715 points.
The new ranking demonstrates how quickly the men’s singles standings can change after a major tournament. The small points gap among the leading players means that strong performances—or unexpected early defeats—can significantly affect their positions.
For Indonesian badminton fans, Christie’s achievement is especially historic. He now joins the elite group of Indonesian men’s singles players who have reached the world No. 1 ranking, following the achievement of legendary player Taufik Hidayat.
With the competition at the top so close, the coming tournaments will be crucial as Christie attempts to defend his position and remain the world’s leading men’s singles player.
