Islands play a major role in shaping the geography, biodiversity, and cultures of the world. Among the largest islands on Earth are many located in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, where volcanic activity, tropical climates, and maritime trade have influenced civilizations for centuries.

These islands vary greatly in size, population, and natural resources, yet each contributes uniquely to regional identity and global importance.

The largest island in Asia is New Guinea, shared by Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is famous for dense rainforests, extraordinary wildlife, and hundreds of indigenous cultures.

Another enormous island is Borneo, known for tropical jungles and endangered orangutans. Indonesia also includes large islands such as Sumatra, rich in natural resources and volcanoes, as well as Sulawesi, recognized for its unusual shape and marine biodiversity.

Japan’s largest island, Honshu, is home to major cities including Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Other important Japanese islands are Hokkaido, famous for snowy winters and national parks, Kyushu, known for volcanoes and hot springs, and Shikoku, celebrated for its historic pilgrimage routes.

Indonesia possesses many additional large islands, including Java, one of the world’s most populated islands, along with Halmahera, Seram, Sumbawa, Flores, Bangka, Yos Sudarso, Sumba, Buru, and the world-famous Bali. The island of Timor is shared between Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

The Philippines also contains several of the world’s largest islands, including Luzon, Mindanao, Negros, Samar, Panay, Palawan, Mindoro, and Leyte. These islands are known for beaches, mountains, and cultural diversity.

Other notable large islands include Sri Lanka in South Asia, Taiwan, Hainan in China, and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. Together, these islands highlight the remarkable geographic diversity and cultural richness found across the world’s largest island regions.
