Southeast Asia is home to one of the largest concentrations of overseas Chinese populations in the world. For centuries, Chinese migrants have settled across the region, contributing significantly to commerce, culture, education, and economic development.

Today, millions of ethnic Chinese continue to play important roles in the societies and economies of Southeast Asian nations.

Indonesia hosts the largest overseas Chinese population in Southeast Asia, with approximately 10.94 million people of Chinese descent.

Chinese communities have been present in the Indonesian archipelago for hundreds of years, particularly in major urban centers and trading regions. Despite periods of challenge throughout history, Chinese Indonesians have made substantial contributions to business, industry, and national development.

Thailand has the second-largest overseas Chinese population, estimated at 7.01 million. The Chinese community in Thailand is highly integrated into mainstream society, with many Thai citizens tracing part or all of their ancestry to Chinese immigrants. Their influence can be seen in the country's commerce, politics, and cultural traditions.

Malaysia ranks third with 6.88 million ethnic Chinese residents. Chinese Malaysians form one of the country's largest ethnic groups and have played a central role in the nation's economic growth. Their rich cultural heritage is reflected in Malaysia's diverse linguistic, culinary, and religious landscape.

Singapore has an overseas Chinese population of approximately 3.02 million, making ethnic Chinese the majority of the city-state's population. Chinese culture, languages, and traditions have strongly shaped Singapore's national identity while coexisting with other ethnic communities.

Myanmar is home to around 1.63 million ethnic Chinese, while the Philippines has approximately 1.35 million. In both countries, Chinese communities have historically been active in trade, entrepreneurship, and economic development.

Vietnam's overseas Chinese population stands at about 820,000, while Cambodia has approximately 780,000 ethnic Chinese residents, both communities maintaining longstanding historical ties to China and the broader region.

Smaller but still significant populations can be found in Laos, with around 190,000 ethnic Chinese, and Brunei, with approximately 40,000. Though smaller in number, these communities continue to contribute to local economies and cultural diversity.

Collectively, the overseas Chinese population in Southeast Asia exceeds 32 million people. Their presence reflects centuries of migration, trade, and cultural exchange that have connected China with Southeast Asia.

Today, these communities remain an important bridge between nations, contributing to regional economic integration while enriching the multicultural character of Southeast Asian societies.
