Electric vehicle (EV) adoption continued to accelerate across Southeast Asia during the first half of 2026, driven by supportive government policies, expanding charging infrastructure, and the arrival of more affordable electric models.

The latest sales figures highlight the region's growing appetite for cleaner transportation, with Indonesia emerging as the largest EV market, followed closely by Vietnam and Thailand. The strong performance across multiple countries underscores Southeast Asia's increasing importance in the global electric mobility industry.

Indonesia recorded the highest EV sales in the region during the first six months of 2026, with 117,108 units sold. The country's rapid growth has been supported by incentives for consumers and manufacturers, as well as significant investments from global automakers establishing local production facilities.

Indonesia's abundant nickel resources, a key component in EV batteries, have also strengthened its ambition to become a regional hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and battery production.

Vietnam ranked a close second with 115,916 EVs sold in the first half of the year. The country's expanding domestic EV industry, combined with growing consumer confidence and an increasing selection of electric models, has fueled impressive market growth. Vietnam continues to position itself as one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.

Thailand secured third place with more than 103,000 EVs sold. Long recognized as Southeast Asia's automotive manufacturing center, Thailand has accelerated its transition toward electric mobility through generous tax incentives, purchase subsidies, and investments in local EV production.

The government is also considering additional measures to further encourage EV adoption and strengthen the country's automotive sector.

Malaysia recorded 51,782 EV sales, reflecting steady growth as consumers increasingly embrace electric mobility. Government incentives, improved charging infrastructure, and the introduction of competitively priced EV models have contributed to the market's expansion. The country continues to attract investments in EV assembly and related industries.

The Philippines posted 31,381 EVs sold, demonstrating rising demand despite being at an earlier stage of market development compared with some of its regional peers. Meanwhile, Singapore registered 7,679 EV sales.

Although the city-state recorded the lowest volume among the six markets, its smaller population means EV adoption remains significant, supported by ambitious sustainability goals and a rapidly expanding charging network.

The first-half 2026 figures illustrate the remarkable momentum of Southeast Asia's EV transition. As governments continue to promote electrification and manufacturers expand their regional presence, EV sales are expected to maintain strong growth in the coming years.

With Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand leading the way, Southeast Asia is becoming one of the world's most dynamic and strategically important electric vehicle markets.
