Southeast Asian Languages with the Most Wikipedia Articles

Southeast Asia is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world. Its countries are home to hundreds of languages, representing several different language families and reflecting centuries of migration, trade, cultural exchange, and historical development.

One interesting way to observe the growing digital presence of these languages is by looking at the number of articles available in their Wikipedia editions.

Among Southeast Asian languages, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, and Thai have particularly large numbers of Wikipedia articles, while several other regional languages are continuing to develop their online presence.

According to the figures provided, Vietnamese has the largest Wikipedia edition among these languages, with 1,304,070 articles. Vietnamese is the national and official language of Vietnam and has a strong presence in education, government, media, and online communication.

Its exceptionally large number of Wikipedia articles demonstrates the substantial amount of knowledge being created and maintained in Vietnamese.

Indonesian comes next with 788,187 articles. Indonesian, or Bahasa Indonesia, is the official language of Indonesia and plays an important role in connecting people across an extraordinarily multilingual country.

Indonesia has more than 700 languages, so Indonesian serves as an important common language in education, government, business, and national communication.

Malay ranks third with 440,603 articles. Malay is an important regional language and is used in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and parts of neighboring countries. Although Indonesian and Malay have developed distinctive national standards, they share many similarities because of their common linguistic background.

Thai follows with 185,962 articles. As the principal national language of Thailand, Thai has a major role in the country's culture, education, literature, media, and digital communication.

The numbers become considerably smaller after these four languages. Tagalog has 49,190 articles, followed by Khmer with 12,256 and Burmese with 11,644.

Lao has 5,595 articles, while Tetum has 1,673. Despite their smaller numbers, these Wikipedia editions remain valuable because they provide opportunities for speakers to access information and contribute knowledge in their own languages.

These figures also show that the size of a Wikipedia edition should not be confused with the number of speakers or the overall importance of a language. The number of articles can be influenced by the activity of volunteer editors, the availability of digital resources, educational practices, and the development of online communities.

Wikimedia's earlier research on Southeast Asian Wikipedias similarly demonstrated significant differences in article growth and editing activity between languages.
