The Fastest-Growing and Declining Car Markets in Asia in 2026
Pakistan shows the fastest increase in car sales, while Iran shows the sharpest decline.
Asia's automotive market is becoming increasingly divided in 2026, with some countries experiencing rapid growth while others face substantial declines.
According to 2026 year-to-date data through July from Focus2move, emerging markets are showing particularly strong momentum, while several major markets are under significant pressure.
Pakistan recorded the strongest growth among the markets in the list, with car sales increasing by 30.2%. Vietnam followed with an impressive 25.0% increase, while India expanded by 16.8%.
These results highlight the growing importance of emerging Asian economies to the global automotive industry. Pakistan's strong performance comes amid changes designed to improve vehicle affordability and reduce barriers in the automotive sector.
Other Asian markets also recorded positive results. Indonesia grew by 8.9%, while Malaysia increased by 3.8%. Taiwan posted a more modest 2.8% increase, followed by South Korea at 2.3% and Japan at 1.6%.
Kazakhstan, meanwhile, recorded a smaller but still positive increase of 0.9%. Together, these figures demonstrate that growth is not limited to one type of automotive market, although the strongest expansion is concentrated among emerging economies.
On the other hand, several countries experienced significant contractions. The Philippines recorded a relatively modest 1.5% decline, but the downturn became much more severe in larger markets.
China, the world's largest automotive market, declined by 15.3%. Because of China's enormous size, its contraction has important implications for global vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.
The steepest declines occurred in the Middle East. Kuwait fell by 19.1%, while Saudi Arabia declined by 20.7% and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) dropped by 21.7%.
Iraq experienced an even sharper contraction of 24.7%, while Iran recorded the largest decline among the markets listed, at 34.3%. Focus2move attributes particularly severe weakness in several Middle Eastern markets to the geopolitical and energy shock affecting the region.
Overall, the 2026 figures reveal a two-speed global car market. Rapidly expanding economies such as Pakistan, Vietnam and India are generating new demand, while China and several Middle Eastern markets are experiencing substantial declines.
For automakers, this increasingly fragmented landscape makes geographic diversification, competitive pricing and adaptation to local market conditions more important than ever.
