The Hottest Capital Cities in the World

Some capital cities are known for their cold winters or mild summers, but others experience remarkably warm conditions throughout the entire year. According to WorldAtlas, the world’s hottest capitals can be identified by their annual average temperatures, with the leading cities recording averages well above 27°C.

At the top of the ranking is Khartoum, Sudan, with an annual average temperature of 29.9°C. Located near the meeting point of the Blue and White Nile, Khartoum experiences a hot desert climate, very little rainfall, and intense sunshine. Its average temperature remains high throughout the year, making it the world’s hottest national capital by this measure.

In second place is Niamey, Niger, averaging 29.1°C annually. Situated in the Sahel, Niamey endures long, intensely hot dry seasons, while daytime temperatures can frequently exceed 40°C during the hottest periods. The Niger River provides an important source of water, although it does little to reduce the city's overall heat.

N'Djamena, Chad, ranks third at 28.9°C. Its position near the southern edge of the Sahara contributes to its hot, semi-arid conditions. The city experiences a lengthy dry season, while its relatively flat surroundings contribute to persistent heat.

Fourth is Djibouti City, Djibouti, with an annual average of 28.6°C. Although it sits beside the Gulf of Tadjoura, its hot desert climate keeps temperatures elevated. High humidity can make conditions feel particularly oppressive.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and Juba, South Sudan, are tied for fifth place at 27.9°C. Abu Dhabi combines desert heat with the humid influence of the Persian Gulf, while Juba's tropical climate brings warm temperatures alongside a much wetter environment.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Bamako, Mali, share seventh place at 27.8°C. Phnom Penh's tropical monsoon climate produces persistent warmth and humidity, while Bamako's location in West Africa contributes to its hot conditions.

Bangkok, Thailand, ranks ninth at 27.7°C. The Thai capital's tropical climate keeps temperatures high throughout the year, with humidity often intensifying the experience of the heat.

Completing the list is Doha, Qatar, with an annual average of 27.5°C. Its desert climate, limited rainfall, and warm Gulf waters contribute to consistently high temperatures.

Together, these ten capitals demonstrate how dramatically climate varies around the world. From Africa's Sahel and desert regions to the humid tropics of Southeast Asia and the Gulf, each city experiences heat for different geographical reasons. Yet they share one defining characteristic: warmth is a constant feature of life throughout the year.
