Rivers have played an essential role in shaping the history, culture, and economies of Southeast Asia. They provide fresh water, support agriculture, enable transportation, and sustain diverse ecosystems. Each country in the region has a major river that is recognized as its longest, reflecting the geographical diversity of Southeast Asia.

The Mekong River is the longest river associated with several Southeast Asian countries. Stretching approximately 4,909 kilometers, it flows through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea.

The Mekong is one of the world's great international rivers and serves as a vital source of water, fish, transportation, and irrigation for millions of people living along its banks.

In Myanmar, the longest river entirely within the country is the Irrawaddy River, measuring about 2,210 kilometers. Often regarded as Myanmar's lifeline, it flows from the northern mountains to the Andaman Sea, supporting agriculture, trade, and many major cities.

Indonesia is home to the Kapuas River, which stretches 1,143 kilometers across West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. It is the longest river in Indonesia and the longest island river in the world, providing transportation and livelihoods for many communities.

Although the Mekong flows through Thailand, the country's longest river located entirely within its borders is the Chi River, with a length of 765 kilometers. The Chi River is an important tributary of the Mun River and plays a significant role in northeastern Thailand's agriculture.

In Vietnam, the Dong Nai River is the country's longest river entirely within its territory, extending 586 kilometers. It supplies water for domestic use, irrigation, and hydroelectric power while supporting the economic development of southern Vietnam.

Malaysia's longest river is the Rajang River, which flows for 563 kilometers through the state of Sarawak on Borneo. The river has long been an important transportation route for inland communities.

The Cagayan River, measuring 505 kilometers, is the longest river in the Philippines. Located on the island of Luzon, it is essential for farming, fishing, and regional commerce.

Finally, Singapore's longest river is the Kallang River, which is approximately 10 kilometers long. Despite its relatively short length, it has been transformed into an important urban waterway and is closely connected with the country's water management and recreational developments.

Together, these rivers highlight the remarkable natural landscapes of Southeast Asia and continue to support the lives, cultures, and economies of millions of people throughout the region.
