The Most Livable Cities in the World
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is currently the most livable city on Earth.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has once again identified the world’s most livable cities in its 2026 Global Liveability Index, which evaluates 173 cities based on five key categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
These factors determine how comfortable and sustainable a city is for residents, making the ranking a trusted benchmark for quality of life.
Topping the list for the second consecutive year is Copenhagen, Denmark, with an overall score of 98 out of 100. The Danish capital earned perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure, reflecting its efficient public services, safe environment, and well-planned urban development.
Vienna, Austria, ranked second with 97 points, continuing its reputation for outstanding healthcare, cultural attractions, and excellent public transportation.
Australia demonstrated its strong urban appeal by placing three cities in the top ten. Melbourne secured third place, followed by Sydney in fourth and Adelaide in eighth. These cities are recognized for their high-quality healthcare systems, strong educational institutions, modern infrastructure, and vibrant lifestyles that balance work and leisure.
Switzerland also maintained a strong presence, with Zurich and Geneva ranking fifth and sixth, respectively. Both cities are known for their efficient transportation networks, excellent healthcare services, and clean, safe environments. Their consistent performance highlights Switzerland’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of living.
Japan placed two cities in the top ten. Osaka ranked seventh, benefiting from perfect scores in stability, healthcare, and education, while Tokyo claimed the tenth position. Despite being one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas, Tokyo continues to excel thanks to its reliable infrastructure, world-class healthcare, and exceptional public safety.
Rounding out the list is Vancouver, Canada, in ninth place. The city remains one of North America’s most desirable places to live due to its strong healthcare system, high-quality education, and beautiful natural surroundings.
The 2026 rankings demonstrate that the world’s most livable cities share common characteristics: political stability, accessible healthcare, quality education, efficient infrastructure, and a healthy balance between urban development and environmental sustainability. As cities continue to face global challenges, these leading destinations provide valuable examples of how thoughtful planning and effective governance can create exceptional living conditions for residents.
