The global electric vehicle (EV) market is entering a new era in 2026, with Chinese automakers strengthening their position while established European and American brands continue to compete for consumers. Based on the 2026 sales figures provided, these are the most popular brands of the year.

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has sold 4.90 million units of EV in 2026. BYD’s international strategy helped offset weakening domestic demand and has been pivotal in maintaining profitability.

Tesla ranks second with 1.75 million vehicles, maintaining its status as one of the world's most recognizable EV manufacturers. Its Model 3 and Model Y remain important contributors to global electric-car demand. Geely follows with 1.58 million, demonstrating how quickly Chinese automotive groups have expanded their global EV portfolios.

Other major players include SGMW at 1.35 million, Volkswagen at 1.22 million and SAIC Motor at 1.05 million. Together, these manufacturers demonstrate that the EV market is no longer dominated by only a handful of companies. Chinese groups in particular have become increasingly influential, with competitive pricing and a broad range of models helping them expand internationally.

The next tier features Xiaomi with 850,000, Changan with 780,000, Li Auto with 720,000 and BMW with 640,000. Wuling follows with 622,000, while Hyundai reaches 580,000. Leapmotor records 520,000, Kia 510,000 and GAC 490,000.

This ranking also illustrates the diversity of the global EV industry. Traditional giants such as Volkswagen, BMW, Hyundai and Kia are competing alongside technology-focused newcomers such as Xiaomi and rapidly expanding Chinese brands such as Leapmotor and Li Auto.

Overall, the 2026 EV market demonstrates that electrification is becoming increasingly global and competitive. With battery technology improving, charging infrastructure expanding and more affordable models entering the market, the race for EV leadership is likely to become even more intense in the years ahead.
