The World's Largest Gold Mines
These ten gold mines are producing most of the world's gold.
Gold remains one of the world's most valuable commodities, serving as a safe-haven investment, a key component in jewelry, and an essential material for electronics and industry.
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, the world's largest gold mines produced millions of ounces of gold in 2024, with a handful of mining complexes accounting for a significant share of global output. These operations span North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe, highlighting the global nature of the gold mining industry.
Topping the list is Nevada Gold Mines in the United States, which produced 83.9 tonnes of gold in 2024. Operated as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont, the massive mining complex includes several world-famous operations such as Carlin, Cortez, and Goldstrike.
Close behind is Muruntau in Uzbekistan with 83.3 tonnes, one of the world's largest open-pit gold mines and a cornerstone of the country's mining sector. Grasberg in Indonesia ranks third, producing 57.9 tonnes of gold while also serving as one of the world's largest copper mines.
Russia's Olimpiada mine occupies fourth place with 44.8 tonnes, followed by Uzbekistan's Almalyk Complex, which produced 34.6 tonnes. Indonesia appears once again in the rankings with Batu Hijau, recording 31.4 tonnes of gold production.
Although primarily known as a copper mine, Batu Hijau generates substantial gold as a by-product, making it one of the world's leading precious metal producers.
In seventh place is Kazzinc Consolidated in Kazakhstan with 31.1 tonnes. The country's rich mineral resources have helped establish it as an important player in global precious metals production. Ahafo in Ghana follows with 24.8 tonnes, remaining one of Africa's largest and most productive gold mines.
Mali's Loulo-Gounkoto ranks ninth after producing 21.6 tonnes, while Kibali in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rounds out the top ten with 21.4 tonnes, making it Africa's largest individual gold mining operation.
Together, these ten mining operations represent some of the most productive gold assets on the planet. Their combined output underscores the continued importance of gold mining to the global economy and reflects the growing role of advanced technology, large-scale investment, and efficient resource management in meeting worldwide demand.
As gold prices remain strong and exploration continues, these world-class mines are expected to remain at the forefront of global production for years to come.
