The World's Largest Sovereign Wealth Funds
Norway has the largest Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world, followed by China.
Sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) have become some of the most influential institutional investors in the global economy. These state-owned investment funds are typically financed by revenues from natural resources, trade surpluses, foreign exchange reserves, or fiscal surpluses.
Their primary objective is to preserve and grow national wealth for future generations while supporting economic stability and development.
The largest sovereign wealth fund in the world is Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, with assets totaling approximately $2.04 trillion.
Established to manage the country’s oil and gas revenues, the fund has built a globally diversified portfolio spanning equities, bonds, and real estate. Its size and commitment to responsible investing make it a benchmark for sovereign wealth funds worldwide.
China Investment Corporation ranks second with assets of $1.33 trillion. Founded in 2007, the fund invests globally across a wide range of asset classes, helping China diversify and enhance returns on its foreign exchange reserves.
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) follows with $1.12 trillion in assets. As one of the oldest and most respected sovereign wealth funds, ADIA manages wealth generated from the United Arab Emirates’ hydrocarbon resources and invests extensively in international markets.
China has another huge SWF with Safe Investment Company which is holding approximately $1.09 trillion in assets.
Next is the Kuwait Investment Authority manages around $1.02 trillion. Another major player is Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which oversees about $925 billion in assets. PIF has gained international attention for its investments in technology, infrastructure, tourism, and sports as part of the Kingdom’s economic diversification strategy.
Indonesia’s Badan Pengelola Investasi Daya Anagata Nusantara, with assets of approximately $900 billion, represents the country’s ambition to mobilize capital for strategic national development and long-term economic growth.
Singapore’s GIC Private Limited manages around $800.8 billion and is widely recognized for its disciplined investment approach. Meanwhile, the Qatar Investment Authority oversees approximately $557 billion, investing in sectors ranging from finance and real estate to technology and infrastructure.
Rounding out the top ten is the Hong Kong Monetary Authority Investment Portfolio, with assets totaling about $525.66 billion. The portfolio serves as a key component of Hong Kong’s financial stability framework and reserve management strategy.
Together, these sovereign wealth funds control more than $10 trillion in assets, making them powerful participants in global capital markets. Their investment decisions influence industries, financial markets, and economic development worldwide, highlighting their growing importance in the international financial system.
