Global cat ownership continues to rise in 2025–2026, with several countries standing out for their exceptionally high share of cat-owning households. Topping the global ranking is Russia, where 59% of households own cats, reflecting a long-standing cultural affinity for feline companions. Close behind is Romania at 48%, followed by Indonesia in third place with 47%, making it the highest-ranking country in Southeast Asia on the list.Indonesia’s strong showing highlights how cats have become deeply integrated into everyday urban and suburban life, particularly in major cities where compact living and busy lifestyles make cats a practical and popular pet choice. The trend extends across Southeast Asia, with the Philippines (43%) and Thailand (42%) also ranking in the global top ten, underscoring the region’s growing pet care market and increasing emphasis on companion animals.Beyond Southeast Asia, strong cat ownership rates are also evident in parts of Europe and Oceania. Poland and New Zealand each record 41%, while the United States and Latvia stand at 37%, and Hungary rounds out the list at 35%. Overall, the data shows that cat ownership is no longer concentrated in a single region, but has become a global lifestyle trend—led decisively by Russia, Romania, and Indonesia.
