Wildlife travel is becoming increasingly focused on rare, meaningful encounters with animals in their natural habitats rather than conventional sightseeing.

The Wildlife Experience Index 2026, created by travel company Bailey Robinson, ranks 30 extraordinary wildlife experiences using six criteria: rarity, remoteness, conservation importance, exclusivity, accessibility and encounter potential. Each factor is scored out of 10 and combined into a total score out of 100.

At the top of the ranking is mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, scoring 90 points. The experience offers travelers an exceptional opportunity to observe one of the world's most remarkable primates in its natural forest environment.

Expert trackers also provide a high likelihood of encounters, while visitor limits help protect the gorillas and preserve the experience's exclusivity.

Second place goes to the emperor penguin expedition in Antarctica, with 88.5 points. Its extreme remoteness and limited accessibility make reaching emperor penguin colonies an extraordinary adventure. The experience received particularly strong scores for remoteness and exclusivity.

Saiga antelope expeditions in Kazakhstan rank third with 87 points. The vast Central Asian steppe provides a dramatic setting for observing this distinctive and conservation-important species.

In fourth place, snow leopard tracking in India and Nepal scores 85.5 points, offering travelers the difficult but rewarding challenge of finding one of the world's most elusive big cats in the Himalayas.

Javan rhino tracking in Indonesia takes fifth place with 85 points. The experience is particularly significant because the Javan rhinoceros is exceptionally rare and its remaining population is concentrated in Indonesia.

Sixth is black rhino tracking in Namibia and Kenya, scoring 84.5 points, followed by polar bear expeditions in Norway's Svalbard with 84 points.

Also scoring 84 points, orangutan encounters in Indonesia rank eighth. The tropical forests of Borneo provide an extraordinary setting for observing these intelligent primates. Indonesia therefore appears twice in the top 10, alongside the Javan rhino experience.

The final two positions belong to Africa. Eastern lowland gorilla expeditions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo score 81.5 points, while African wild dog safaris in Botswana and Tanzania score 81 points.

Overall, the ranking demonstrates that the world's greatest wildlife experiences are often defined by rarity, remoteness and conservation value. Eight of the top 10 experiences involve threatened species, emphasizing how responsible wildlife tourism can connect extraordinary travel experiences with the protection of endangered animals and their habitats.
